Use Planar Switch and Reprisal for faster combo generation and remember that you can put up your defenses with less than 5 combo points (2-4 work just fine) on the initial pull.
If you have trouble with the initial pull or just feel too squishy without your buffs up use Rift Prison on an enemy and use Cadence to build up some combo points on it, this will not pull the whole pack so you get 6 extra seconds before the pull.
When you feel you have a hold on this role consider expanding your rotation with False Blade and Motif of Bravery (if a bard is not already present).
If your healer dies unexpectedly (witch will happen sooner or later) remember you have some very nice abilities for just such an occasion.
Use Planar Refuge if your hp is above 50% to maximise it's benefit.
Side Steps although a bladedancer ability do not ignore it's usefullness, this ability will make even the hardest pull possible (Note: does not work well on bosses).
Scatter the Shadows is your panic button, always know where it is.
Defer Death is pretty much your last resort. Due to it absorbing all incoming damage for 10 seconds you will inevitably die when it ends (if you actually used it at the appropriate that is) so use it only when you are very close to dying and with no hope of getting healed.
Regarding aggro generation, you may notice that it's not easy to keep aggro on a single target when you have a couple of high dpsers in your group. To keep aggro from them you will have to use Rift Disturbance whenever it is off cooldown even though it's an AoE ability or use Instigate whenever you lose aggro.
