Deed Fishing
Recently Ive been doing some fishing in Lotro in order to complete the deeds and get 3 housing group-fishing trophies.
Sturgeon and Trout Group Trophies
Each trophy requires you to catch 9 rare fish from the Sturgeon, Trout, and Darter family, 27 in total. Catching a particular rare fish requires you to be in the right zone and have a sufficiently higher enough fishing skill level.
Drop Rates
Rare fish have a drop rate of about 2%. On average it takes between 20-40 seconds to catch a fish, which means you will catch roughly 120 an hour. From this, you are likely to catch 2 rare fish. However, the drop can also be a fish you may have already caught numerous times before, meaning you may have to fish for several hours at a time, over the course of several days to land the fish you need. The drop is completely random. Every time you pull in a fish, it has roughly a 2% of being a rare fish and 0.28% chance of it being the rare fish you need for that particular zone. I have often caught two rare fish within 5 casts of one another.
Cooldowns
Rare fish will continue to drop, there is no daily limit on rare drops. However I noticed that the longer you fish in a given day, the slower the drop rate seems to get. The first 1-2 hours worth of fishing seems to be most fruitful.
Bait
It is still unclear if the use of bait has a profound impact on amounts of fish caught. Most say to avoid it, but I noticed a slightly higher drop rate for rare (deed) fish when using the Red Wriggler bait, but nothing consistant. I caught all but two of my deed fish using no bait.
Rod
A well-crafted lebethron rod can increase your fishing skill by 5. For example, if your proficiency is 70, this rod will give you a boost to 75 which would enable you to catch a Cutthroat Troat (75) if you were in the appropreate zone. A better rod will not increase the drop rate of rare or trophy fish.
Regional Location
Only certain deed fish are available in certain regions, and with minimum skill levels as illustrated below:
Zones and Fishing Skill Levels (FL)
Zones do not contain rare fish from other zones. This is good as it means you can target specfic zones for specific fish and not re-catch unwanted duplicates from previous zones. For example, there is no danger of you recatching the Lake Trout you once caught in Bree, in Angmar.
Specific location
A topic that has been heavily discussed in the lotro community - whether certain rare fish can only be caught at certain fishing spots within a certain zone. I think this is definately the case. Random ponds and lakes never seem to have a high drop rate for rare fish. Below are my recommended fishing holes:
Low (Bree, Ered Luin, Shire)
Bree- Greenway Crossing Bridge, Bree Homestead waterfall.
Ered Luin - Thorin's Hall Pool
Shire - Brigand Waterfall, Bywater Pond.
Mid (Lone Lands, North Downs)
Lone Lands - Pool south of Ost Guruth stable master
North Downs - Kingsfell Bridge, Pools near southern Elf camp, Trestlebridge lake.
Mid-High (Evendim, Trollshaws)
Trollshaws - Stream behind Last Homely House in Rivendell, Garbert's Cottage, Bruinen River crossing.
Evendim - Tinnudir (poor drops for me, but others have favoured it)
High (Angmar, Forochel, MM)
Angmar - Pool inside Gath Forthnir, pool outside Gath Forthnir
Lothlorien - Mirrormere river as you exit moria.
By Type
Note: This is just where I caught them. Probably means nothing..
Darter
Redfin - Greenway Crossing, Bree
Bandfin - Bree Homesteads, Bree
Blackfin - Kingsfell Bridge, ND
*Splendid - Kingsfell Bridge, ND
Greenfin - Ost Guruth Pool, LL
*Longfin - Garbert's Cottage, TS
Bloodfin - Homely House, TS
Orangefin - Gath Forthnir (ext.), Angmar
Firebelly - Gath Forthnir (int.), Angmar
Trout

Speckled - Greenway Crossing Bridge, Bree
Lake - Greenway Crossing Bridge, Bree
*Bull - Elf Camp, ND
Red Spotted - Treslebridge river, ND
Cutthroat - Homely House, TS
Rainbow - Garbert's Cottage, TS
Redband - Gath Forthnir (int.), Angmar
