Information from:
www.gamespot.com/news/6171172.html ; tinyurl.com/3a6pzu ; pc.ign.com/articles/790/790158p1.html
History
StarCraft 2 started development in 2003, after WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne was done. SC2 is/was developed by a team of 40 people.
General Information
Story/Races
- There will only be 3 races: Protoss, Terran, Zerg (confirmed by sources)
- The Story takes place 4 years after Broodwar
- Xel'Naga will play a role in the story.
- Each race has new units.
- The Terran and Zerg will not have a mothership-like unit.
Mechanics
- Units attacking from cliffs will still be covered by Fog-of-War.
Technical Stuff
- You will be able to change the camera angle/position
- There will be variable game speeds.
- There is no limit to how many units you may have selected
- There will be a map editor (Scumedit) and mod tools (Startool)
- Blizzard is encouraging the viewing of replays to create the excitement of competitions
- Blizzard will add new features to Battle.net
Requirements
- The game will run on Windows XP/Vista and Mac OSX
- There are no minimum requirements as of yet. The game will use PixelShader 2.0
- The game will use a new Engine, not a modified WCIII one.
- The game will also be using the Havoc Physics Engine
- The graphics will be scalable so the game can run on a wider range of hardware.
New Units/Abilities
(Note: Names may not be exact. I am taking this from the videos, and some names are hard to hear)
Protoss:
Units:
Immortals:
These replace the Dragoon. There are no more Dragoons. They have a special shield that only activates when hit by a powerful attack. This shield protects it from heavy damaging units (eg. Siege Tank), while it is still vulnerable to less powerful attacks.
Phase Prisms:
A flying unit that can create a power field anywhere. Like a mobile Pylon.
Stalkers:
Small walker unit. Like an Immortal, but a Dark Templar version. Is fast and has a cannon. Can also blink (warp) to an area in it's sight range.
Colossus:
Huge walker with 4 long legs. Can step over cliffs. Sweeps a beam weapon across the battlefield to attack multiple targets at once. Works well for groups of small targets.
Phoenix:
Flying unit. Has an ability to attack all nearby units.
Mothership:
Large, spinning air unit. You can only make 1 at a time. Can fire many lasers at multiple targes. Can create a forcefield that stops bullets from hitting it. Can fire lasers straight down under it for a sustained period, damaging any unit under it. Very powerful. Can take down multiple BattleCruisers.
Warp Ray:
Flying unit with a front cone made up of spinning pannels. The pannels open like a bud, and it fires a continuous laser. The more it fires on one target, the more damage it does.
Abilities:
Dash:
Zealots will dash into their enemies when they got close to them.
Warp:
The Protoss can create units anywhere that there is Pylon power. Can be used with the Phase Prism, as well.
Blink:
Stalkers use this to teleport around areas in it's sight range.
Overload:
Ability that allows the Phoenix to attack all nearby enemies. They are rendered disabled for a short time after it's use.
Black Hole:
Mothership ability. It creates a small black-hole on a point on the map. Draws in units near it and destroys them instantly, for a period of time. (Air Only, perhaps)
Time Bomb:
Mothership ability. It creates a field around the ship that will stop bullets for a period of time.
Planet Cracker:
Mothership ability. Fires lasers straight down under the mother ship for a period of time. Heavily damages whatever is under the Mothership. The mothership can move while firing this.
Terran:
Units:
Reapers:
Units armed with 2 pistols. They can use a jump ability to jump cliffs either way. Their weaker pistols can hit through the Immortal shields. They also move very fast.
Abilities:
Jump:
Reaper ability that allows it to avoid some terrain obstacles, such as cliffs..
Zerg:
Units:
Banelings:
A Zergling morph. They roll along the ground and explode in a suicide attack. Like the Scourge from SC1, but on the ground. (Baylings?)
Abilities
Nydus Worm:
Sends units to a location on the map. Like a mobile Nydus Canal.
Morph to Baneling:
Zerglings morph into suicidal rolling units.
Old Units
Protoss:
-Zealot
-Templar
Terran:
-SCV
-Marine (w/ Shield)
-Ghost
-Siege Tank
-Battle Cruiser
Zerg:
-Zergling
-Mutalisk
